Schiermonnikoog
adalah sebuah pulau kecil di lepas pantai Belanda yang telah terus
bergerak ke arah selatan dan timur, karena efek kombinasi dari angin
pasang surut serta ombak laut. Sekitar 762 tahun yang lalu pulau ini
berada 2 km ke utara dari posisinya sekarang, dan memiliki bentuk
yang berbeda secara signifikan. Secara matematis pergerakan pulau ini
rata-rata sekitar 2,62 meter per tahun.
Pulau ini sebenarnya tidak benar-benar
bergerak. Laut telah mengikis sebagian pulau ini dan membuat celah
baru di sisi yang lain sehingga pulau ini berubah bentuknya setiap
hari.
Nama
“Schiermonnikoog' berasal dari para biarawan yang dulu tinggal di
pulau ini. "Monnik" berarti "biksu" dan "Schier"
adalah sebuah kata kuno yang berarti "abu-abu", mengacu
pada warna kebiasaan para biarawan. "oog" diterjemahkan
sebagai "pulau". The Schiermonnikoog diterjemahkan sebagai
"pulau para biarawan abu-abu”.
Pulau
ini berukuran kecil, dengan panjang 16 km dan lebar 4 km dan
merupakan situs taman nasional pertama Belanda '. Desa-satunya di
pulau ini juga disebut Schiermonnikoog, dan sekitar seribu orang
secara permanen berada di pulau ini. Karena pulau ini kecil dan
datar, warga harus mengambil lisensi khusus untuk menjaga mobil
mereka dan hanya ada 200 penduduk di pulau ini yang memiliki mobil,
sehingga membuat jalan-jalan di pulau ini hampir bebas mobil.
Pariwisata

tinggal di 5.500 tempat tidur yang tersedia di rumah penginapan,
apartemen dan hotel.
